What is digital
marketing?

Digital marketing is marketing that takes place on digital platforms and channels online. It’s about promoting products and services by getting the right message to the right people at the right time.

Writing blog posts to attract visitors to a website, promoting products on social media, and paying for Google Ads are all examples of digital marketing.

What do digital
marketers do?

There’s a lot involved in digital marketing which means there’s a wide range of career paths you can go down. You can specialize in a specific area, or work as more of a generalist.

Here are some of the different areas involved in digital marketing:

🎨 Creative Content

A big part of digital marketing is creating content, whether it’s writing blog posts and ad copy, or creating social media posts and engaging emails, there’s lots of work available if you’re interested in writing or graphic design.

📢 Advertising

Running ads on Google, YouTube, Instagram, and other platforms is how brands pay to attract customers. If you want to work with advertising, you’ll need to learn how to use different advertising platforms and how to constantly monitor and optimize your work.

📊 Data & Analytics

Digital marketers need to be good at looking at data to decide what’s working and what’s not so they can improve their strategies. This means studying things like website traffic, ad performance, and social media metrics.

🔎 Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO is how brands rank higher on Google so they can drive more traffic to their website. SEO involves strategy, writing, and technical aspects like keyword research, monitoring website performance, and technical SEO.

🖥️ Web Design & Development

Whether it’s through blog posts, paid ads, or social media, a lot of digital marketing is about getting customers to a company’s website. Which means that creating user-friendly, visually appealing websites is also very important in digital marketing.

💡 Strategy & Branding

There’s a lot of strategy involved in digital marketing. What works for one brand might not work for another. People who work on the strategy side of digital marketing, need to know how to look at the big picture to connect companies with the right audience.

How much can
you expect to earn
in digital marketing?

Pay for entry-level positions in digital marketing ranges from $40,000-60,000 but once you gain a little experience, you can expect to earn more than that. Here’s what you can expect to earn when you start working your way up the digital marketing ladder:

  • Mid-level positions: $66,000 to $123,000
  • Senior-level positions: $105,000 to $129,000
  • Digital marketing director: $110,000 to $181,000

What kind of
education do you need?

While some positions may require a formal education (college degree), you don’t need a degree to get started in digital marketing.

What’s most important is knowing how to stay up to date. Since much of the work is based on algorithms that change regularly, you need to be open to continuously learning and improving your skills. If you like to keep up with industry trends and changes, you’ll do great in digital marketing!

Fortunately, you can learn pretty much everything you need online. There’s no shortage of paid and free online resources, from YouTube videos to courses, that will teach you enough skills to get an entry-level position at most agencies or in-house teams.

Our digital marketing agency is a little different than other agencies because ours revolves around our values: building long-term relationships, creating fun, always doing what’s right, and staying committed to continuous improvement. These principles guide every project we take on and ensure we exceed partner expectations.

In practice, that means we take a different approach to digital marketing, one that promotes sustainability, DEI, and working with partners that align with our values. It’s also why we became B Corp Certified in 2020.

What’s a B Corp Company?

Certified B Corporations are businesses that prioritize people and the planet just as much as they do profits.

The B Corp framework enabled us to expand on our values-driven culture. Helping us evolve into a company that also takes into account the effect we have on the planet and works to create more justice and equity for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals in the tech and marketing world. Staying true to our own value of continuous improvement, we completed our first B Corp recertification at the end of 2023 with a 21-point increase in our B Impact score.

Digital Strategists
Paid Media

Meet Autumn Buck,
our Sr. Paid Media Digital Strategist

What does a paid media digital strategist do?

I manage partners’ digital marketing efforts for paid media and SEO. This is largely made up of spearheading paid advertisements online across various platforms and assisting in content creation (blogs) or on-page optimizations for websites. Reading, copywriting, and analyzing data are the three things I spend the most time doing during my day-to-day work.

How did you get started in this field?

I made a career shift and used my background in creative endeavors, sales, and operations management to pursue an entry-level position and learn my way up the ladder.

What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in paid media?

I suggest first pursuing online self-learning opportunities through SkillShop (FREE!) to attain certifications for different advertising platforms, signing up for WordStream and Search Engine Journal newsletters for continued education, and attending webinars. These are great ways to find out if this is a career you would enjoy. Second, start looking for a good company with entry-level positions or internships to get on-the-job training.

Web Team
Design & Development

Meet Piper Denney,

our Sr. Web Developer and Team Lead

What does a Sr. Web Developer do?
I lead the web team at Intuitive Digital where I strategize, build, and maintain websites. I’ve grown to love engaging with our partners to identify their broader vision and collaborating with my team to piece the details together, creating user-friendly websites that align with current objectives and future aspirations.

How did you get started in this field?
I taught myself to code and attended a full-stack development program to solidify my technical skills and agile development. Before that, I worked as a musician and wrote music for TV commercials. This background gave me a unique perspective and passion for the convergence of people, technology, and design.

What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in web design/development?
To get into web design/development, care about people first. Identify a problem you want to solve for people and design/build it. Code is a language and you are the translator. Seek out others to look at your work. Collaborate. Build connections and apply to jobs that interest you.

General Business

What does a chief of staff do?
As chief of staff, I manage the finance and people functions at my organization. I sit on the leadership team and make sure they have the money they need to be budgeted and the teams are taken care of (benefits, growth, and compliance).

How did you get started in this field?
I started as a receptionist at a law firm. It just took years of slowly taking on more HR and finance duties until I felt comfortable stepping up into a higher role. Look into organizations like SHRM that can help you grow your knowledge via classes and online content.

What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in HR?
Make connections with other finance and HR professionals to get the inside track on the lessons they learned (join Slack groups!). There are local meetup groups in each city that get together once a month, which is a great way to network and get a better idea of the day-to-day of this role.
